KHENG HUA TAN

Mei-Li Shen in “Kung Fu”

Kheng Hua Tan stars as Mei-Li Shen, Nicky’s (Olivia Liang) strict, no-nonsense mother, on The CW’s series “Kung Fu.”

Tan has been a well-known and highly respected award-winning actress and producer in Southeast Asia for many years but has recently become equally recognizable all over the world due to her scene stealing performance as Constance Wu’s mother in the smash hit “Crazy Rich Asians.” Her role as “Empress Dowager” on Netflix’s “Marco Polo” brought much acclaim, and since relocating to Los Angeles in 2019, she has guest-starred on “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Magnum P.I.” and “Medical Police.” Tan is currently recording her role in Paramount Pictures “The Tiger’s Apprentice,” an animated feature with an all-star cast including Henry Golding, Sandra Oh, Michelle Yeoh, Bowen Yang, Sherry Cola, Leah Lewis and Brandon Soo Hoo. “The Tiger’s Apprentice” is currently scheduled for a February 2023 release.

Besides her many film and television accomplishments, Tan is also renowned in the Singapore theatre scene, where she’s a prolific actress and independent creative producer. She creates content of all genres, including cabaret, drama, comedy, musicals, etc. One of the television dramas she created and produced, “Do Not Disturb,” was the first local, English language television series to receive the maximum 5-star rating from the Singapore Times. She has also created and produced festivals such as the Sin-Pen Colony at the George Town Festival in Penang and the Twenty-Something Festival in Singapore.

Tan was named one of 20 contemporary artists representing Singapore in Singapore Inside Out in NYC, London and Beijing. Tan has also been nominated for and won a plethora of awards, including The Art Nation (Best Actress), the DBS Life! Theatre Award (Best Actress), Asian Television Award (Best Comedic Performance by an Actress and Best Dramatic Performance by an Actress), the Star Award (nominated for Best Supporting Actress), the JCCI Singapore Foundation Culture Award for Contribution to Singapore and the Critics’ Choice Award (Best Actor) at the Cairo International Festival of Experimental Theatre.
